Holiday Cruising

If you can’t stomach the thought of making another pumpkin pie, or you get tired just thinking about trying to fit "just one more chair” around the dining room table during the holiday season, maybe it’s time to give yourself a break with a holiday cruise. On a holiday cruise, you take the best parts of the holidays: the celebrating, the fun with family, and the delicious meals – while someone else does the work, including all the clean-up.

Cruise lines are rolling out more holiday activities with each passing year.

For example, most cruise lines serve up bountiful Thanksgiving Day feasts. Imagine slow roasted turkey with all the fixings, and topping it off with traditional pumpkin pie or pumpkin crème brulee, all without lifting a finger. Disney Cruise Line trots out Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and friends dressed in traditional Thanksgiving attire. And what would Thanksgiving be without football? Disney also broadcasts the big games live on the ships’ outdoor, jumbo LED screens, and other cruise lines have been known to give football extended airtime on Thanksgiving Day, too.

If your family celebrates Hanukkah, celebrating the Festival of Lights onboard a cruise ship can be the start of a new family tradition. Children will delight in Hanukkah arts and crafts, sing-alongs and games while aboard Royal Caribbean International’s ships. Cruise lines will often prepare special Hanukkah food – so you won’t miss out on the potato latkes – and there may be a rabbi onboard who will help conduct a traditional Hanukkah religious service.

Children of all ages can get into the Christmas spirit while onboard many of the major cruise lines. Popular cruise activities include holiday movies and music, carolers, meet and greets with Santa and his elves, Christmas Eve story time, and midnight mass or inter-denominational services. The ships are often decked out with colorful boughs of holly and glitzy Christmas trees. Of course, what would Christmas be without a feast, and the cruise lines stop at nothing to make sure your holiday meal is one you’ll never forget.

Cruise ships are known for their elegance but they also know how to throw a great party. When New Year’s Eve rolls around, there may be no better place to ring in the New Year than a cruise ship. You can typically rely on the cruise lines to provide countdown celebrations and themed parties that last long beyond midnight. Some also provide special countdowns and parties for children and teens. New Year’s Day often means college football in the lounges, along with lots of munchies.

Don’t forget that holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve are also celebrated around the world. Marking the occasion in a port of call by visiting that country’s places of worship or town celebrations can be a unique way to mark the holiday.

Because of the wide array of festivities planned aboard cruise ships, holiday cruises often sell out early. It’s recommended you plan your holiday cruise a year in advance. Then it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy the true meaning of the holiday!
